Council Backs 11-Month Continuation and Independent Scrutiny

An extraordinary evening for Save SOBO Beach.

Tonight, we had the privilege of presenting the Save SOBO Beach petition to the full BCP Council, with the opportunity to answer councillors’ questions about our campaign.

With more than 10,000 signatures, potentially a record for a public petition presented to BCP Council, and such strong support in the room, it was a powerful reminder of just how much this special place means to our community.

After nearly three hours of debate, councillors voted in favour of an amendment intended to pause the proposed long-term lease decision, seek further independent scrutiny and assurance, and provide a route for SOBO Beach to continue operating for another 11 months.

This is a significant development, and meets some of our proposed resolutions, but there is still a great deal to consider and ponder.

We will carefully review the details and consult with the SOBO Beach team tomorrow before sharing a fuller update on what this means and what comes next.

For tonight, we simply want to say a heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone who signed, shared, attended, spoke up and helped make this campaign possible.

Whatever comes next, you’ve demonstrated the extraordinary power of a community coming together to protect something it loves.

The strength of our community voice was heard tonight.
